Typed Cover Letter Or Handwritten One? What To Use

By Tabitha Makumi,
It’s not once or twice that this kind of question has hit my inbox; it reads something close to this, “What is the best form of a cover letter? Do I send a typed one or a handwritten one?
We now live in a world where almost everything is done through computers….click click the keyboard and voila!….. but wait a minute I once heard that handwritten cover letters are more effective than typed ones…..what to do??????
Martin Githaiga a HR Consultant with a leading HR Consultancy firm advises that, “If you are applying for a job where your handwriting will be a key factor to be considered for example a Personal Assistant Jobs they will often indicate on the job advert that you are suppossed to send a hand written cover letter. As a job seeker, follow instructions.
But there are a lot of jobs nowadays which will not indicate this kind of instructions on the job advert, what is a job seeker to do?
“In this case, always go with a typed cover letter.  As a recruiter who deals with a lot of CV’s and Cover letters daily I would much rather see a neat typed covering letter on A4 rather than a hand written one,” Martin adds.
Allow me to add this, your cover letter is your big opportunity to sell yourself to the prospective employer. It should be typed in a plain font, neatly formatted into paragraphs which draw out and expand on the qualities / experience you have mentioned on your CV that make you the best person for the job.
