Umma University is the newest university in Kenya accredited by the Commission for University Education.
The University combines Islamic moral and ethical orientation with practical knowledge of business and information communication technology with the aim of nurturing scholars andleaders with multicultural experiences and high ethical standards.
The University currently offers courses in business management, information and communication technology, Islamic Shari’ah, Islamic Studies and Islamic Banking and Finance.
The Mission of the University is to provide sound, quality, effective and accessible university education through teaching, research and community service with the goal of producing competent leaders andscholars of high integrity and moral uprightness.
The Vision of Umma University is to be a centre of excellence and a seat of knowledge in the region and contribute to the improvement and upgrading of the quality of human life and civilization.
Umma University Council invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates with excellent credentials to lead the institution as the first Vice Chancellor.
The Vice Chancellor is the most senior position in the University management.
The Vice Chancellor provides strategic leadership, cultivates networking and strategic alliances with key stakeholders and partners and is responsible to the University Council for the management and strategic growth of the University.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Vice Chancellor as the Chief Executive Officer of the University has overall responsibility for academic and administrative leadership and will be responsible and accountable to the Council for the Institution’s mandate.
The Vice Chancellor as academic and administrative leader of the university is expected to perform the following duties and responsibilities:
Provide strategic direction and leadership to the University and represent the University nationally, regionally and internationally;
Have overall responsibility on the direction, organization and the administration of programs of the University;
Coordinate the development and implementation of the academic and administrative policies of the University in accordance with the University Strategic Plan and Master Plan.
Maintain efficiency and harmony in the University and ensure enforcement of the statutes, regulations and policies;
Provide innovative and creative leadership in the areas of Academics, Finance, Planning and Development, General Administration, Research and Partnerships;
Play a key role in the facilitation and maintenance of linkages with the government and regulatory agencies and other local and international institutions of higher learning and give Umma University desirable visibility.
Requirements
Applicants should meet the following requirements:-
Be a holder of PhD from a recognized university, and should be a Full Professor or Associate Professor of exemplary performance record or its equivalent.
Have at least eight(8) years experience in academic and research at senior level and demonstrated leadership skills in an academic or research institution for at least six (6) years at the level of Senior Lecturer or Senior Fellow Research and above;
Should have published in internationally recognized peer reviewed journals, and extensively presented in international conferences;
Have good understanding of corporate governance structures, financial and fiscal policies, strategic planning, human resource management and planning and procurement supported by relevant training and certificates;
Have excellent understanding of the current trends in university education globally, and a broad awareness of the factors and conditions shaping the development of university education in Kenya and the world;
Be a leader with potential to plan, develop and implement academic programs and develop strategic institutional linkages;
Have excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills;
Have demonstrated ability to network, fundraise, mobilize training and research grants that will be central to the development of the university;
Be registered with a recognized professional association/body in their profession where applicable;
Be of highest ethical and moral standard, integrity, accountability and professionalism, teamwork and stewardship;
Be a practicing Muslim.
Terms and Conditions of Service
Successful candidates will be offered a competitive and attractive remuneration package in accordance with the Umma University Staff Terms and Conditions of Service.
The appointments will be for a contractual period of five (5) years renewable for a further period of five (5) years through a competitive process or otherwise.
