Job Interviews: 5 Types of Interviewers To Expect & How To Handle Them

By Tabitha Makumi,
No matter how many interviews you’ve been to, you are always going to get those butterflies at your lower abdomen as you wait at the reception.
The nervousness escalates as you open the door to the interview room and your feel your heart pound against your chest.
You are inside the interview room; your nervousness I am hoping has resided and you are ready to go. You have the right answers at the tip of your fingers, you are dressed for the part but wait a minute is that the kind of interviewer you were expecting to meet?
Somethings you can plan and rehearse for but somethings you can’t. One of those things is the interviwer who will be grilling you for the next ten, fifteen minutes or so.
Remember while many interviews do follow roughly the same format, there are actually as many different types of interviewers as there are people in the world.
It’s good to familiarize yourself with some common interviewer types and arming yourself with effective strategies for dealing with each of them.
Here are five types of interviewers you can be expecting to meet.
1.The inexperienced or ill prepared Interviewer
How would you feel if you walked into an interview room to find that even the person who should know what to do doesn’t seem to have it all together?I know, you will think, ‘leo nimeangukia’ and someone else will get pissed because that is not what they were expecting.
There are a few thing to consider after encountering such an interviewer, one, the interviewer is new to the company or simply new to the hiring process and they just do not have kind of experience to showcase.

Job Interview Panelists
In your part, stick to your planned talking points and maintain an aura of calm and poised professionalism. It’s bad form to make reference to the interviewer’s lack of training or preparation, but if he repeatedly states that he can’t answer your questions, you may want to see if there is anyone else with whom you could schedule a discussion with.
2.The Interviewer who wants to chat
Who won’t feel  relieved when they encounter a friendly interviewer? But be careful though, you will be tempted to let down your guard but don’t do it!
Respond with warmth and friendliness, as these qualities are likely to be appreciated by the chatty type. Play it safe & just engage actively in the conversation and answer skillfully when and if you are asked a question.
3.The Interrogation Interviewer
My friend, you will feel like you are being grilled by the no-nonsense jourmalist Udwak Amimo if you encounter such an interviewer. This is the kind of  hiring manager who tends to fire questions off rapidly, often in a tone and manner that is more than a little intimidating.
For your part, maintain your composure at all times. Take time to think about your responses and answering in even, calm tones. Remember to remain pleasant.
4.The Interviewer Who Follows A script
They will follow a certain script, even follow questions as you had rehearsed for them. Their main purpose is to remain as objective as possible and do what they came to do within the shortest time possible. They are not here to chat with you, or intimidate you with the entire interviewing process.
For your part, don’t derail the interview by deviating sharply from the pace set by this kind of interviewer. You may be able to distinguish yourself by gently engaging the interviewer in a discourse that flows both ways and respectfully drawing her out of her set routine.
5.The Nosy Interviewer
This one will just make you want to get pissed. They will repeatedly asks you questions that you feel are inappropriate or make you uncomfortable and make you wonder what does have to do with a job interview?
For your part,  respond with a gentle redirect, stating that you’d prefer to stick to standard work-related topics.

4 Tips Of How To Overcome The Fear Of Failure in Life

By Tabitha Makumi,
Last week something unexpected happened to a friend of mine at work. Everything was going fine with the company she works for until all over the sudden the receptionist decided to quit her job with a one week notice. My friend who has never had any experience being a receptionist was moved to the reception area and told to hold the position until the company can hire someone else.
“I am scared shitless. I have never been a receptionist before. What am I going to tell the people who come one in to inquire about our services. I mean, I know what the company is all about but still….” On and on she went and for sure I could see that she was indeed scared.
One week later and she seems to be doing okay at the reception “It’s not as bad as I thought it would be,” she told me over the weekend with a huge grin across her face.
There’s something my friend exhibited at the beginning, FEAR of FAILURE.
Most of us are so afraid of failing that we don’t not even get started. We are afraid of job rejection that we sometimes refuse to apply for jobs that we are qualified for. We have the perfect ideas for entrepreneurship but won’t start working on them because ‘what if we fail’ and I am asking you, what if you don’t?
You see, failure isn’t holding you back buddy it’s the fear of failure which is. We’re conditioned to fear failure, as if lack of failure guarantees success.
Here are four actions you can take to shake off the doubt and feel like a pro.
1. Accept that failure is a reality.
Let’s be real here. No matter how much you learn and move forward from a failure in life, the fact of the matter is that failure does happen – even to the best of us. But you know what? Who cares! I’ve personally found that as soon as you accept failure as a reality, it won’t be this big, frightening thing that you once thought it was.
FailureYou’d be surprised at how much freedom that gives you to move forward, try new things, and experience successes you might not have otherwise.
2.Look at the worse-case scenario
In some cases, the worst case scenario may be genuinely disastrous, and it may be perfectly rational to fear failure. In other cases, however, this worst case may actually not be that bad, and recognizing this can help.
3. Embrace Your Mistakes
If you immediately berate yourself for a mistake, you’re probably stuck in a fixed mindset. Stop beating yourself up. Remember that successful people don’t see failure as this big monstrous thing which is going to consume their whole lives, they see it as a good data point to guide their next attempts and to learn from.
4. Shift Your Perspective
Who taught you that failure was a bad thing? It feels bad, so it must be bad. Is that really true?Every belief and thought that makes us feel bad needs to be examined. What good does a fear of failure do us?
It’s easier said than done to eliminate negative beliefs, but it all starts with being aware that a problem actually exists. The last thing you want to do is get mad at yourself for not being perfect. We all have our unique fears and they are there for a reason.
Your fears will help you grow in the way you need to grow. You realize your negative beliefs when they need to be realized. There is no rush. This is not a competition. You’re doing perfectly.

CV Writing. 4 Things You Should Remove From Your CV Right Now

CV Writing Tips. By Dorcas Karuana,
It only takes and employer or a recruiter about 30 seconds to scan through your CV before deciding whether it is worth keeping aside or taking a longer and closer look at. Apart from the design and layout (degree to which your CV is arranged and pleasing to the eye) the most important thing that attracts the glancing employer to take a closer look at your CV is the content.
During that 30 seconds you don’t want the employer seeing things that will mostly kill off your chances of getting a deeper look-in and possible consideration. You don’t want irrelevant messages and content in your CV because the more irrelevant information you leave there the more unlikely it is that your CV will hold the attention of the employer.
Ideally your goal should be the employer/recruiter to be held by your CV and make him shortlist your application for possible future interviews. To make your CV achieve its mission here are things you should set about removing from your CV now.
1. Photos – Attaching a photo on your CV has no great importance unless you are applying for a job where physical attractiveness is of high importance or applying for a modelling gig or where the employer has asked you attach a photo on the CV.
cv 2It profits you nothing and depending on whom you sent your CV to might even cost you a chance to be considered. What you want is for the employer to see your work accomplishments and compelling information on why you are a good fit for the job not for him to admire your looks on your CV!
2. Unnecessary Personal Information- People include all sort of unnecessary information such as: religious affiliation (who cares what you worship), languages spoken including mother tongue, nationality even when its not an international job, and even personal passions that have no bearing whatsoever to your professional/career goals or even to the job you are pursuing. Revealing too much personal information will open the doors of discrimination against you even as many of the information do not have any relation to your ability on the job.
The key is to think through each information before including it. Does it make any improvement for your case? Will including that personal information (possibly about your religion, political affiliation etc) open up discriminatory doors against you?
3. Reasons for Leaving Your Former Job - If you have worked before there are chances that you may have left your one or two former jobs in a way you’d prefer not to have happened.
You are under no obligation to reveal why you left a previous job. If it comes up in an interview, address the question honestly. But you certainly don’t have to volunteer this information up front. You should never include ‘reasons for leaving your former job’ on your CV. You only tackle the issue when asked during interviews.
4. Irrelevant Work Experiences – Many CVs have a lot of irrelevant work experience. Instead of trying to impress the employer by including all and any non-relevant experience you have had at working on anything carefully try to project the work experience you have that are relevant to what the employer needs.
You should include your most current three work experiences while the other appears in significance work experience.
Your CV should showcase the relevant experience you have garnered in the past that will prove useful and relevant for the job.

Job Interviews: How To Make A Killer First Impression

Most people will judge you within the first second of meeting you and their opinion will most likely never change. Making a good first impression is incredibly important, because you only get one shot at it.
People can make incredibly accurate snap judgments in a tenth of a second. So how can you ensure people are judging you accurately and also seeing your best side?
You never want to give people an inauthentic impression — many people can intuitively feel if someone is being fake immediately. However, any time you meet someone for the first time, you always want to start on the right foot. Here are a few ways you can make sure people’s first impression of you is a good one:
1. Set an intention. The most important thing to do for giving a good impression is to set your intention. This can be an incredibly grounding experience and works very well to focus on what kind of energy you want to have for your event.
2. Think about your ornaments. Clothes, make-up, jewelry, watches and shoes are all types of ornamentation and people definitely take these into account when making initial judgments. Asking friends you trust what they think of when they see your outfits or ornaments. For many men, they do not realize that their watch can say a lot about them. For women, purses and large earrings or jewelry can also indicate a lot to a new person they are meeting. Make sure that what you are wearing and how you do your hair or make-up says what you want it to say to the people you are meeting for the first time.
3. Be Conscious of Your Body Language.
Job Interviews 1
Body language in interviews
Body language is a crucial part of first impressions. Everything from your posture to how you carry yourself to the way you’re angling your body. Often, simply being aware of your body language can result in immediate improvements. Subconscious cues to keep in mind include noticing where you point your feet, the position of your shoulders, and the way you shake hands.
4. Avoid bad days. If you are in a depressed or anxious mood, others will pick up on this from your facial expressions, comments and body language. If you’re having a bad day, stay home! Otherwise, find a way to snap yourself out of your bad mood.
5. Be interested and interesting. If you are truly interested in meeting people and are open to learning about who they are, they will get this in a first impression. When you are meeting people for the first time approach others with a genuine interest in who they are. This is often contagious and you will have better conversations and lasting connections when you are interested because they become interested.
