Researcher, Governance Crime and Justice (GCJ) Division Nairobi Office
The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) is an independent, non – profit applied policy research organization with a focus on human security in Africa. Its mission is to conceptualize, inform and enhance the security debate on the continent.
The ISS has offices in Addis Ababa, Dakar, Nairobi and a head office located in Pretoria.
The Institute for Security studies is offering an exciting new opportunity for a highly motivated researcher to be based at the ISS office in Nairobi.
As an integral member of the GCJ team, the researcher will be dealing with broader aspects of research and advocacy projects in the field of criminal justice, policy and practice, tackling corruption and good governance.
He/she will work closely with a network of African governments, regional organizations, the diplomatic community as well as research institutions.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
Work as part of a team under the supervision of the Head of Division and Head of the Nairobi Office to identify critical areas of new research and advocacy to support good governance and improve policy and practice in the broad area of criminal justice
Conceptualize and develop research proposals and manage research projects
Proactively initiate, undertake high quality primary and secondary research on Governance, Crime and Justice.
Convene seminars and experts roundtables and interact with key organizations.
Have an existing network of contacts and established relationships with relevant stakeholders in government and civil societies in Kenya.
Have published journal and media writing articles and have experience in editing.
Grant interviews to media and organize targeted policy briefings to stakeholders.
Work closely with relevant regional organizations within the region.
Present research findings at ISS and other relevant forums.
Actively pursue the exchange and protection of information to ensure effective knowledge management according to ISS’ organizational objectives.
Requirements
The candidate should have at least a Masters degree in a relevant social science discipline such as International Relations, Political Science, Conflict and Peace Studies, Strategic and Security studies, Law or related qualification;
A minimum of five years of relevant applied research experience in a policy environment;
At least three years in managing projects;
Good analytical research, editing, presentation and writing skills;
An understanding of the government’s policy-making environment in Kenya, East Africa and the Horn.
Good publication record on African political dynamics and issues related to human security and governance;
Ability to undertake networking with academia and other research organisations;
This position includes local and regional travel hence the intended candidate should have capacity to travel extensively in the region in pursuit of research deliverables.
The length of contract will be for two years and will be renewable subject to future funding.

    Faculty Development Advisor - Long-term Consultancy Job


    IDLO seeks a Faculty Development Advisor who will report to the Country Director, South Sudan, and be responsible for the following: 
    • In coordination with the Dean of the College of Law and University Academic Committee, develop, implement and secure accreditation for a one-year interdisciplinary faculty development certificate program for College of Law junior faculty; 
    • Provide mentoring to faculty in researching and writing scholarly articles and support the  publication of a law journal; 
    • Support the development of  textbooks on South Sudanese law in cooperation with junior faculty and external academic consultants; 
    • Provide support to teaching staff in the development of interactive teaching methodology and assessment strategies; 
    • Mentor members of the academic staff on desk-based and empirical research methods; 
    • Provide direct support and coordinate external support to junior members of staff in skills development including advocacy, legal drafting, public speaking, and leadership; 
    • Develop legal outreach and public service activities in the community through direct support to junior faculty; 
    • Support the College of Law in the development of student oriented clinical legal education;

    • An advanced degree in law

    Hygiene and Sanitation Promotion Advisor Jobs in Kenya


    Pact seeks a Hygiene and Sanitation Promotion Advisor for an anticipated Kenya Integrated Water Sanitation and Hygiene (KIWASH) program in Kenya, focused on strengthening governance for resilient and sustainable management of WASH services and water resources, in addition to institutionalizing catalytic models of sustainable service delivery.
    S/He will be responsible for advising on the technical activities of the program related to hygiene and sanitation promotion and behavior change communication (BCC).
    This may include assisting in the design of the program, monitoring of the program, liaison with local partners and building local partner capacity, documenting and disseminating lessons learned, and advising in-country staff on technical and implementation issues related to hygiene and sanitation promotion.
    S/he will ensure the project’s hygiene and sanitation components are meeting technical quality standards. Key responsibilities will include:
    Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Develop hygiene and sanitation promotion strategies, including behavior change communication strategies, as well as tools and methodologies.
    • Design formative research to identify and prioritize current barriers to behavior change and inform BCC hygiene and sanitation promotion campaign development;

    Jobs Qualifications

    Regional Safety Analyst Jobs in Kenya


    INSO Kenya aims to support security awareness and security management capabilities of NGOs through provision of high quality, real-time flash reporting, periodic analysis and meetings, training and orientations and other request based services.
    We are now seeking an experienced safety expert to join our team as a Regional Safety Analyst (RSA) based in Dadaab refugee camp, North East Province.
    The RSA leads the delivery of INSO’s core support services to those NGOs operating from the camp, and the surrounding provinces, and will combine a strong technical security background with an deep appreciation and understanding of NGO principles and approaches.
    The post will suit those from either a humanitarian or security background who hold a keen interest in Kenyan conflict dynamics and the ability to work in difficult environments.
    Key areas of responsibility include:
    • Establish and maintain an active information source network including amongst NGOs, the UN, military forces, and other national and international security actors to obtain and verify credible and relevant security information. 
    • Provide NGOs with timely and credible security information and a contextual analysis of the local and regional security situation. 
    • Write comprehensive bi-weekly analysis reports on the provincial and regional security context as it relates to NGOs, and produce daily FLASH incident reports and threat warnings as appropriate.
    • Facilitate weekly NGO security roundtables in your region of responsibility, presenting trends and facilitating discussions. 
    • Assist NGOs to develop their own security management capacities by reviewing policy, conducting site-security surveys, and assisting in evacuation planning and emergency management.
    • Manage and supervise a small operational/administrative team (5-10) and oversee local logistics and administration. 
    • Effectively represent, promote and protect INSOs mandate for independence, impartiality and neutrality.
    • Fluent in English language (written and spoken)
    • Graduate level education (BA/BSc or equivalent Military College) in relevant field.
    • Minimum 3 years experience working in an insecure/post conflict environment.
    • Minimum 1 year’s recent experience in Kenya (in any capacity but preferably in camps)
