The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is
the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General
Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and
cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.
The UN-Habitat – Advocacy, Outreach and Communications Branch
internship is for 3 months with an opportunity for extension, pending on
the needs of the department.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision
of a staff member in the department or office to which they are
assigned.
Daily responsibilities will depend
on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as
the internship period.
Under the direct supervision of the World Urban Forum 7 Project Leader, the intern will:
1. Assist in research and collection of data and other relevant information on the World Urban Forum (WUF);
2. Assist in follow up with focal points and substantive event organizers on finalization of concept notes and summary briefs;
3. Support compilation of information for the website;
4. Support engagement with Branches and assist with compilation of material for posting on the website;
5. Backstop note taking/preparation of minutes of meetings on WUF;
6. Assist in follow-ups with the World Urban Forum preparations
7. Draft short memoranda and concept notes on topics designated by the WUF Coordinator
8. Support the coordinator in preparing responses to inquiries
arising from meetings and correspondence with Partners, members of the
Committee of Permanent Representatives to UN-Habitat (CPR) and
UN-Habitat staff;
9. Assist in drafting responses to general inquiries in Spanish;
10. Assist in translation of documents in Spanish for the website;

Education
Applicants must be enrolled in at least the third
year of a first university degree program or in a graduate school
(second university degree or higher) program at the time of application,
commencement and during the internship.
Be computer literate in standard software applications;
Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United
Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
Have a demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with
individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include
willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions
and views.
Studies in organizational development, programme management, communications, or related field desirable.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
Fluency in the working languages of the UN Secretariat, English
or French and/or Spanish, (both oral and written) is required; knowledge
of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is
an advantage.
This Internship requires knowledge of English and Spanish.
